Exhibitions in 2017

The Unknown Military opened on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, with a reception from 4 to 8 p.m.

The show honors the veterans of America’s wars.  Drawing from the Photography Center's  extensive archives of vintage images, curator and Associate Director Adam Putnam has assembled an unprecedented exhibition of photographs and artifacts representing every major US conflict from the Civil War to the Iraq War.

Hundreds of images are on view, including Daguerreotype and tintype portraits from the Civil War era, French soldiers in the trenches of World War I, sailors in the World War II Pacific Theater. The images are of unknown persons, made by unknown photographers offering uniquely personal photographic perspectives.

To broaden the viewing experience, a variety of vintage artifacts and art are included in this exhibit.  From the Photography Center Museum, cameras from each period will be paired with examples of photographs which could have been made by them.

The Unknown Military uses images from original unique personal photo albums to document places, people and events, and to honor those who served and sacrificed in combat from the 1860s to the 21st century.
