Exhibitions in 2013 12-12-12: One Day in the LifeJanuary 25–March 3, 2013
12/12/12 — This repeating date will never repeat. Exhibitors used this date to make photos for "One Day: 12/12/12" the next exhibition at the Photography Center of the Capital District. Such a day will certainly have an aesthetic effect on your photography. That is where the PhotoCenter comes in for its first exhibit of 2013. The competition was open to all: any geographical location, any subject matter, any photographic methodology. In brief, photos made on 12/12/12 of any mundane or any special event(s) that occurred in the vein of “A Day in the Life of …” series will be shown. Even a commonplace locale or event can be made interesting photographically — at home, at work, at play. The exhibition incluides 80 images by 33 imaginative photographers who took up the challenge to show us the scenes and events that stimulated their creative vision during the 24 hours that was December 12, 2012. Several photos were timed at precisely 12 minutes after 12 o'clock, yielding a date stamp of 12/12/12-12:12. College Student ShowMarch 9–April 14, 2013The PhotoCenter’s annual College Student Show this year included high school juniors and seniors taking an art or photography class for the first time. All college students were invited to participate. Any subject matter and any photo medium were acceptable. College students did not need to be enrolled in a photography or art course. More than 50 images were accepted. Awards: $500 in cash awards were offered by the Christos Apostle Charitable Trust.

No sooner were we thoroughly impressed by the work of more than 100 photographers who entered their work in Photography Regional 35, but now we have the selected exhibits to enjoy. Twenty percent of the entered work in the salon was selected for the Photo Regional opened on May 4 following the awards presentations and juror's talk.

The juror, Shelby Lee Adams, has reduced the 353 images — which were exhibited in a salon-style show — to a highly select 71 photographs by 59 photographers. Eleven photographers had more than one selected work. More than 60 percent of the exhibited photographers are current or former members of the PhotoCenter and/or Fulton Street Gallery.
The annual Photo Regional is being hosted by the Fulton Street Gallery, with participation by the Photography Center of the Capital District, Troy. This is a salon-style exhibit where all entries will be displayed in the galleries for at least one week.
Photographers living within an 80-mile radius of Albany/Troy were eligible and encouraged to participate.
The opening reception on May 4 included a talk by juror Shelby Lee Adams. Adams was born in 1950 in Hazzard, Kentucky. His nearly four decades of photographic work has explored the weight, beauty, and complexity of life in the Appalachian region. His photographs are in more than 60 museums including MOMA and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, as well as private collections.

Photo Regional 35 Awards
Many PhotoCenter supporters received additional recognition with special awards. Honorable mentions went to Luba Ricket from Arlene’s Artist Supply for her Flight of Fancy Shadowbox; Doug Mitchell from McGreevy ProLab for an untitled image, and Joseph Schuyler also from McGreevy ProLab for Room 642 — The Gershwin.
The Photography Center recognized the outstanding work of Ian Creitz and Robert Feero with a commitment to host a future exhibition of their work. The Photography Center also purchased several pieces for its permanent collection from members Janet Wolkenstein and Christina Coogan.
Stephen Honiki received a workshop certificate from the Center for Photography at Woodstock and Newbold Bohemia won a purchase prize from PhotoGraphic (Susan Myers) for The Good Wife. Christina Coogan received a $100 cash award from Micro Optical Methods (Dennis O'Leary) for Three of Me #4.
Susan Myers received a cash award of $100 from the Schenectady Photographic Society for her giant cyanotype Beginnings. The Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson awarded $200 to Dan McCormick for Helen W 12-12-12-05AD, one of his series of pinhole images which incidentally was part of the PhotoCenter’s 12/12/12 exhibition.
The grand prize was awarded to Tom Santelli for El Sagrado Carazon with $300 cash and a $250 gift certificate from McGreevy ProLab.
Diane Reiner topped the People’s Choice votes with her image Rock Top, an unusual perspective looking down on spectators looking out from the observation deck of Rockefeller Center.
Lady Ostapeck: Somewhere in Time

A new book has been produced to accompany her current show. Lady Ostapeck: Somewhere in Time, the second volume in the “Portfolio Book Series,” is an exquisite 126-page book that includes a series of portraits of Sandra Balint titled “Women of the World.” Its highlight is her never-before published “Doll Series.” This is one of the finest and largest books published by the PhotoCenter as part of a unique and exceptional exhibit. Lady Ostapeck will be visiting, offering a singular opportunity to meet the artist.
It is available from the PhotoCenter for $32.50.
Lady was given an antique doll in childhood ( in the 1920s) that remained remarkably intact. Named Suoma Ellen Elizabeth, Lady created settings and appropriate garb to make portraits of Ellen Elizabeth as she traversed from infancy, through childhood, to maturity, and as a grandmother. This series of doll portraits, made with considerable attention to accurate detail, has never before been exhibited intact in the United States.
The children's portraits are made in Lady's incomparable Victorian-era style of portraiture, except that no artist of that period was Lady's equal in lavishing detail.
Sandra Balint returned to Lady's studio annually during the 1990s for a series of stunning portraits, each made to represent a persona, usually of a famous woman in a bygone era.

Documentary Lady With Horse Rereleased
Filmmaker Philip J. Marshall has rereleased his 2001 documentary, Lady With Horse, in digital format. Profits from its sale will go to Lady Ostapeck. The 87-minute film is available online as a download at http://vimeo.com/ondemand/ladyo for $3.50. The PhotoCenter is offering a DVD version for $15. DVD orders through PayPal should go to payments@photocentertroy.org.
The DGA (Directors Guild of America director/producer has working in public television for 20 years. Marshall has been a filmmaker for more than 35 years.
Max Tiller: Photographs from the Vintage Years

Max Tiller is a master printmaker, winner of innumerable photography awards, frequent exhibitor throughout the capital district, photo guru and advisor to many. This retrospective exhibit features work from over the past 65 years. Yes, Max has been making beautiful photos for longer than the median age of the population. This show was Max to the max.
7th Annual Members Show

This year we featured 88 diverse, delightful, creative prints from 48 talented photographers. This was another exceptional must-see exhibition. Congratulations to all the artists who participated in the Members Show. There was a People's Choice Award based on balloting by visitors.
More than 90 visitors to the exhibit cast ballots for their favorites. Almost every photo received votes which demonstrates the diversity and quality of the entire show.The leading votes in the Peoples Choice Award balloting were for the following images:
